System for reinforcement of suture lines and prevention of dehiscence
The primary treatment for the 80% of nonmetastatic cases of colorectal cancer, the third most common cancer worldwide, is surgical resection. Anastomotic leakage is one of the most feared surgical complication with significant morbidity, prolonged hospital stay, increased cost, increased mortality and cancer recurrence in patients undergoing colorectal surgery. This device will pave the way to personalized treatment of colorectal anastomotic healing.
This device is made mainly by inexpensive, natural materials, is bioresorbable, is implanted during surgery and can vehiculate therapeutic agents that can have different constitution and effects. The components of the device are studied in such a way that they may act in the different phases of anastomotic healing and counteracts, if not all, many of the aspects related to anastomotic leakage where and when they occur. By using nanoparticles that can be heated from the outside of the body or intraluminally with laser light, it is possible to modulate, days after the initial surgery, the release of drugs or to use heated nanoparticles to solder tissue collagen, so to optimize their effect when most needed (e.g. after the inflammatory phase, at the beginning of the remodeling phase, when the anastomosis is at its weakest point).
- Improving healing of end-to-end anastomosis in hollow organs, in particular intestinal anastomosis (not only, also eventually vascular anastomosis);
- Applicable both hand sutured or stapled anastomosis.
- The “T” shape combines advantages of a buttressing device with those of a wrapping device;
- Gives mechanical reinforcement of the sutured/stapled line;
- Gives protection around the anastomosis;
- Vehiculate nanoparticles to solder the collagen inside the anastomosis;
- Vehiculate drugs to enhance anastomotic healing or to counteract anastomotic leakage;
- These drugs, combined with nanoparticles, can be released “on demand” days after surgery by application for different laser light wavelength.
