Introduction
The proposed methodology employs innovative techniques based on evolutionary computing in order to optimise the overlapping covering of geometrical spaces of arbitrary shapes, also when such shapes are concave/convex, or present holes, using tiles of arbitrary sizes.

Technical features
The proposed methodology employs innovative techniques based on evolutionary computing in order to optimise the overlapping covering of geometrical spaces of arbitrary shapes, also when such shapes are concave/convex, or present holes. There are a number of possible application to such methodology: among them, the main one is antenna positioning when covering arbitrary outdoor spaces in the case when a single point must be covered at least a certain number of times. Other possible applications are optimal disposition of intelligent agents in simulations for efficient redundant information transmission; application of multilayer tiling using natural material, with arbitrary shapes. From simulative and infield tests using a low-cost experimental system for geolocalisation in confined areas, a consistent save in antenna numbers and in efficiency of covering up to the target criteria.
Possible Applications
- Antenna disposition on irregularly shaped spaces;
- Optimal overlapping covering of irregular areas with arbitrary-shaped elements;
- Optimisation of distribution centres for redundant covering of the pertinent area.
Advantages
- Computational easiness;
- Arbitrary shapes for both covering area and tiles;
- Highly customisable.
