Introduction

The present invention is a kit for the visual determination of chlorine concentration, through the colorimetric reaction with the synthetic molecule 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). This method is useful for effectively analysing  chlorine levels during the disinfection of drinking water or for water used for recreational purposes (swimming pools, water parks, etc.).

Technical features

The present describes to a kit for the colorimetric determination by means of the synthetic molecule 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) of the chlorine level normally added in the water for the inactivation of numerous microorganisms and pollutants and to guarantee their protection from recontamination. The colorimetric kits available on the market are based on molecules that generate monochromatic solutions, which are, moreover, extremely polluting and toxic, which allow only a highly approximate estimate of the chlorine levels. On the other hand, the TMB dye is a reliable multi-colorimetric chlorine indicator capable of overcoming the limits of the products on the market by generating different colors for different levels of chlorine present. It can be used at very low concentrations, however, the kit is suitable for greatly reducing the risks of intoxication and environmental pollution. The kit allows for results to be ready in approximately 30 seconds, it is portable (weigh < 100 gr), and can be combined with others pH test in the market. The patented test can be used in both recreational and polluted waters.

Possible Applications

  • Professional chemical analysis;
  • Hygiene and public health;
  • Environmental checks;
  • Recreational activities;
  • Teaching.

Advantages

  • Simplified interpretation of the results;
  • Greater sensitivity and accuracy of chlorine measurement;
  • Multi-colorimetric test (blue, green, yellow);
  • Less health risks;
  • Low concentrations of the indicator and lower environmental toxicity.
