CHITOSAN FILMS FOR 2D NEURONAL NETWORKS

Adhesion factorChitosanNeuronal networksSupports for cultures

Introduction

The standard methods for the functionalization of supports used for neuronal cultures are based on the use of synthetic or natural biopolymers, which generally have high costs. The object of this patent is the alternative use of chitosan as adhesion factor for 2D neuronal cultures. Thanks to its versatility, it could be easily functionalized for the fabrication of personalized of in vitro models.

Technical features

The patent focuses on the use of chitosan as an alternative cell adhesion factor for 2D neuronal cultures onto different supports. Chitosan is a polysaccharide derived from chitin, which is the main component of crustacean exoskeleton. Standard methods for the functionalization of supports for cell cultures are based on the use of synthetic (poly-ornithine) or natural biopolymers (laminin), which generally display high costs, especially for laboratories working on cell cultures mainly. On the contrary, chitosan is a natural biopolymer which has the ability to sustain neuronal cultures adhesion and differentiation. In the proposed new methodology, chitosan solution can be deposited by adsorption and nebulization.
