Introduction

The present invention relates to an applicator device for interventional radiotherapy (brachytherapy) or perineal interventional and/or diagnostic procedures, suitable to provide a guide for the percutaneous insertion of needles or catheters useful for conveying radioactive material in a temporary or permanent manner. Moreover, the device has a conformation such as to enhance the accuracy in the execution of the procedures through the use of image fusion techniques acquired with different diagnostic methods, e.g. Magnetic Resonance (MR) and Ultrasound.

Technical features

The invention is an applicator device suitable to provide a guide for the percutaneous insertion of catheters, needles or more generally needle-like elements which, for example, contain seeds of radioactive material to be implanted into a patient’s body district or are useful to take tissue samples for diagnostic investigations. The device can be used during the diagnosis and treatment of pelvic pathologies such as tumours of anus, rectum, prostate, vagina, vulva, for example by brachytherapy or other therapies. For this purpose, the applicator is made entirely of non-metallic material or in any case in a material which cannot shield radiations or create artifacts during diagnostic procedures, preferably a plastic material. Therefore, it can be used both for procedures and MR and CT in complete safety for the patient. The applicator comprises a main body substantially shaped like a plate with an operative surface bearing the through holes which provide the guide for the percutaneous insertion of needles or catheters. This main body has two curved perimetral portions, in particular, concave portions, i.e. re-entering towards the inside of the main body, specially shaped to adapt to the anatomy of the body district to be treated, and achieve a stable positioning of the device during treatment. The applicator has an overall T-shaped configuration; in particular, in use, the device is employed in an inverted T-arrangement. According to such configuration, the T-shape gives the applicator a whole range of different use options since it is suitable indiscriminately for applications at anus, rectum, prostate, vulva or vagina. Furthermore, the concave central cylinder allows the execution of ultrasound-guided procedures.
